“A pregevole cascina.” That’s how the Regional Directorate for Cultural Heritage described Cascina Carpana. We’re standing in front of a rural complex with a closed courtyard. It likely dates back to the 19th century. Cascina Carpana is nestled in Milan’s southern countryside.

Cascina Carpana is located in Via San Dionigi. Specifically, number 121. It sits within the Parco Agricolo Sud Milano. It is midway between the Corvetto district and Chiaravalle Abbey. North of here lies the city. To the east, south, and west are three parks: Porto di Mare, Vettabbia and Gino Cassinis.

The farmstead first appeared on maps in 1865. In 1888, it gained its definitive closed-court structure. This feature led to its historical and artistic recognition in 2007.

Historically, the main buildings surround a central courtyard. This courtyard provided common services. Part of the courtyard is occupied by the farmyard. This space was used for working, drying, and distributing the harvest. Before storage, this was a vital process. The complex showcases harmony in volumes, colors, and materials. The rhythmic alternation of open and closed spaces is also characteristic.

The main building stands perpendicular to the road. It has a T-shaped layout. It also has two floors above ground. A central portico features five round arches on massive brick pillars. The design emphasizes regularity and symmetry. Other buildings shape the complex’s closed form. They share consistent construction and materials. These include brick load-bearing walls, pillar structures and wooden floors.

The site is subject to landscape restrictions. It falls within the “Parks” designation. This is due to its aesthetic and traditional value.

Some inconsistent alterations exist. Yet, interesting original typological features remain. The municipality has launched a call for bids. This is for the architectural and functional redevelopment of some buildings. These include the residential building along the public road and its rustic annex. Also included are the former club building, its woodshed, a southeast stable and a small northeast stable.

The buildings’ architectural quality varies. The main house is relatively well-preserved. It features fine finishes like Milanese terracotta floors. The residential building has more rustic architectural solutions. This reflects its original function. Over the years, this building suffered from a lack of maintenance. It now faces structural issues, water infiltration and plaster deterioration.

The roofs need consolidation and partial replacement. The two stables are in fair condition. But they require renovations. This will allow them to accommodate new functions. The window and door frames are heavily damaged. They need complete replacement.

The spaces of Cascina Carpana will open to the public. They will offer recreational activities. These include a restaurant, a bistro bar and circus workshops. Also planned are theater, cinema, sports activities and pet therapy. Opening hours will generally be from 9 am to midnight. This will depend on events and organized activities.

In 2022, SVS Donna Aiuta Donna Onlus won the bid for Cascina Carpana. This association leads the temporary business association “Progetto Ri-Nascita”. This project includes SVA DAD Onlus, Campacavallo ASD and Casa di Accoglienza delle Donne Maltrattate.

Cascina Ri-Nascita aims to be a safe space. It will offer serenity, training and work for women. It will also support their children. The project is a collaboration between anti-violence centers and Campacavallo. The team secured a 90-year concession.

Ten women with their children will live in independent apartments. They can rebuild their lives free from violence. Ninety women can attend training courses and internships. They will work in the farm’s businesses. This fosters growth and skills.

The project will sustain itself. It will provide work through various activities. These include a restaurant, an organic bistro, and the sale of organic food. Also planned are pet therapy, dog training, riding stables and craft markets. Finally, restoration workshops, cabinetmaking and tailoring will be available.

The renovation aims to preserve the complex’s original features. The intervention focuses on recovery and redevelopment. This enhances a complex otherwise destined for decay. The design integrates new functional needs. It also preserves existing elements. Sustainable construction systems ensure high thermal performance. Geothermal energy, photovoltaic systems and home automation are utilized. The project employs BIM methodology. This creates a digital twin for each element. It also consolidates information for future maintenance.

Cascina Carpana embodies resilience. It is a place where history meets hope. It also empowers women to rebuild their lives.
