A haven of peace and serenity. That’s Cascina Barbinetta for you. Nestled on the outskirts of Lambrate this farm is more than just a place to cultivate the land.

Cascina Barbinetta’s story begins much earlier than its current incarnation. Originally known as Cascina Biblioteca it has a history stretching back centuries. In 1617 Cardinal Federico Borromeo fell in love with the estate. He even wrote a book praising the contemplative life there. Upon his death he bequeathed the estate to the Biblioteca Ambrosiana. The proceeds from the land were to fund daily masses in his memory and dowries for eighteen poor girls annually.

For over three hundred years Cascina Biblioteca remained under the library’s ownership. In 1941 ownership transferred to Count Orsi Mangelli. He used it for horse breeding and hay production. The city of Milan acquired Cascina Biblioteca in the 1960s. It became part of the expansion of Lambro Park.

Today Cascina Barbinetta is a vibrant community center. It’s dedicated to integrating vulnerable people. Numerous associations work together here. They focus on social inclusion for people with disabilities. They strive to improve their quality of life. Vocational training housing and job placement are offered.

One remarkable project is the Trattoria Solidale. It’s considered Milan’s first educational restaurant. Located in the courtyard it provides employment opportunities. These opportunities are particularly for young people with emotional fragility or intellectual disabilities.

The farm is home to a variety of animals. Horses goats donkeys and hens all roam the grounds. The philosophy emphasizes the educational value of human-animal interaction. This focus supports people’s psychophysical well-being. Hippotherapy and equestrian rehabilitation are offered. They help people with disabilities develop their abilities.

Cascina Barbinetta’s rich agricultural tradition has been revived. Eight hectares of land are now cultivated organically. This includes hay for the horses flowers for honey bees and over three hectares of vegetables. The produce is sold at L’Insalata Matta a farm-to-table shop.

Cascina Barbinetta truly embodies community spirit. Many activities serve the neighborhood. These include a woodland kindergarten shared gardens summer camps a bicycle workshop and spaces for events. Professionals vulnerable citizens and volunteers work side-by-side. They create opportunities for local involvement in a peaceful atmosphere. Cascina Barbinetta a place where history meets hope.
