“Acqualunga,” the name whispers tales of water and history. Today we stand before Cascina Acqualunga. It is a place where the past flows as steadily as the nearby stream.

Cascina Acqualunga’s story begins with water. The name itself reveals its origin. “Acqua lunga” means “long water”. It points to the nearby waterway that builders valued. They chose to settle by the bank of a roggia or irrigation ditch. This ditch stretched far and wide. It was known as the Gamberina.

Originally, the names of the farm and the ditch were likely intertwined. A document from 1262 mentions a place called Gambarino. This community paid tithes from their harvests to the Church of Rosate. An act from 1616 refers to the Gamberina as “the large roggia called Acqualonga”.

In the past, Gaggiano was located on the left bank of the Naviglio. Acqualunga was a separate community. The cascina changed in 1936. A new manor house was built. It then housed tenant farmers.

The agricultural area of Cascina Acqualunga faced challenges. In the early 1970s, a large chemical plant was established. Thirty years later, a vast residential neighborhood appeared. These developments impacted the rural landscape.

The cascina’s history is documented. Maps from 1722 show the territory of Gaggiano. These are found in the Archive of the Milan State. Maps from 1897 show the administrative area of Gaggiano. These maps are from the Cessato Catasto. The Italian Touring Club map from 1937 also depicts the area. The Regional Technical Map from 1983 provides further details.

The address of Cascina Acqualunga is Via Matteotti in Gaggiano. Its construction dates back to before 1722. Alterations continued until before 1983. Today, it serves as both a residence and a place for agricultural production.

Cascina Acqualunga is a testament to Lombardy’s rural heritage. It stands as a reminder of the importance of water. It also highlights how communities evolve over time. As you explore, consider the generations who lived and worked here. Their lives were shaped by the land and its waters. The murmuring waters tell us to remember Acqualunga’s story.
