Perched gracefully on Avenida Costanera Vicente Pérez Rosales is Casa Raddatz. Today, we will delve into its history. Casa Raddatz stands as a testament to Puerto Varas’ rich heritage. Built between 1916 and 1920, Casa Raddatz was commissioned by Christian Julius Raddatz Prill as a family home. For decades, the Raddatz-Harrich family called it home.

Casa Raddatz is one of the few remaining houses that reflect the early German colonization of the area around Lake Llanquihue in the mid-19th century. Its architecture speaks volumes about the era. The house has a constructed area of 677.8 square meters on a 1242.3 square meter lot. Native woods form the framework. Walls and roofs are clad in alerce tiles. Its L-shaped structure features a chamfered corner and a plinth that rises about a meter above street level. Casa Raddatz has one floor and an attic. It is composed of three simple volumes of varying proportions. These combine to create a large, asymmetrical C-shaped building.

Declared a National Monument in 1992, Casa Raddatz is more than just a building. Its architectural and historical significance led to this prestigious recognition. The main facade features cornices and corner pilasters. Jambs and other details adorn the doors and windows. The meticulous repetition and distribution of these elements contribute to its unique charm.

Currently, Casa Raddatz houses the Fundación para la Cultura y las Artes Bosque Nativo. This institution is dedicated to promoting culture and the arts. Although Ernesto Raddatz Harrich owns the house today, it serves as a cultural center. The Centro de Extensión Cultural y Artístico Bosque Nativo hosts diverse exhibitions. These include painting and photography, opening its doors to anyone interested in experiencing Puerto Varas’ cultural life.

The building’s use as an art gallery has led to some interior modifications. These include changes to the windows, attic and bathroom. Despite these changes, Casa Raddatz retains its historical appeal. As part of the Plan Maestro Zona Típica Puerto Varas, a recovery project is underway. This project focuses on restoring areas damaged by structural rot and wood-boring insects. The goal is to preserve Casa Raddatz for future generations.

Casa Raddatz stands as a living symbol of Puerto Varas’ history. It bridges the past and present. The Casa Raddatz offers visitors an unforgettable experience.
