Imagine standing before a stately building on Rua do Campo Alegre in Porto. This is Casa Primo Madeira, a palace built in the 19th century, a testament to the city’s grand past. In the late 19th century, the building, originally designed by architect Jose Marques da Silva, was the residence of Counselor Pedro Maria da Fonseca Araujo, a prominent figure in Porto’s civic life. Araujo added to his legacy not just through his civic duties but by his patronage of art and culture. The building housed a magnificent collection of furniture, artworks, and historic artifacts, making it a true cultural jewel in Porto’s crown. The building was constructed in a rectangular shape with a basement and two floors and is topped with a mansard roof. A unique bow-window on the facade provides not only a decorative beauty but also gives the building its character. A graceful portico adorned with granite columns arches over the entrance. Inside, the home is a labyrinth of rooms, each one filled with unique features. The building boasts delicately crafted wooden floors, stuccoes in the ceilings and walls decorated with floral motifs, and doors topped with engraved glass. The building has been through various transformations. In 1985, it was repurposed to become the Circulo Universitario do Porto, a club dedicated to promoting interaction within the University of Porto community. The renovation process, undertaken by renowned architect Fernando Tavora, emphasized maintaining the building’s original character. Casa Primo Madeira stands proud today, a reminder of Porto’s history, culture, and commitment to its citizens.
