Slipping through the historical currents of Spanish aviation, we find ourselves face-to-face with the CASA Northrop SF-5A Freedom Fighter. This isn’t just a relic of the past. It’s a symbol of Spain’s modernization, a testament to its partnership with Northrop, and a unique chapter in the Freedom Fighter’s global story. The CASA Northrop SF-5A stands as a distinct variant, born from a licensing agreement between Spain’s Ejercito del Aire (EdA) and Northrop in 1967. CASA, Construcciones Aeronauticas S. A., took on the task of producing these powerful machines on Spanish soil. The “S” in SF-5A proudly proclaims its Spanish origin, setting it apart from its American counterparts. The EdA designated these single-seat fighters as C.9, the “C” for *casa* (fighter) and “9” marking it as the ninth fighter type since the EdA’s inception in July 1939. The initial order encompassed a diverse fleet: 34 two-seat SF-5Bs, and 18 each of the single-seat SF-5A and the reconnaissance variant SRF-5A. Northrop supplied the first eight aircraft in varying stages of completion, from components to near-finished airframes. The remaining aircraft emerged from CASA’s facilities in Seville and Madrid-Getafe, a collaborative effort with Seville producing aft fuselages and engine mountings, and Getafe handling the rest. Interestingly, while assembled in Spain, the engines and avionics still hailed from the US, a reminder of the international collaboration at the heart of this aircraft’s creation. The first Spanish-built SF-5B took to the skies on May 22, 1968, marking a milestone in Spanish aviation. Production continued until 1971. The CASA Northrop SF-5A served primarily in ground attack roles, later designated as A.9 by the EdA. By 1982, operational attrition had taken its toll, and around half of the remaining SF-5As underwent conversion to the SRF-5 (CR.9) standard, interestingly retaining their M39 nose cannon. Later, CASA initiated an upgrade program in collaboration with Bristol Aerospace of Canada. This involved significant structural and avionics improvements, extending the lifespan and capabilities of these remarkable aircraft. Today, the CASA Northrop SF-5A serves as a powerful symbol of Spain’s aviation history, a testament to international collaboration, and a unique chapter in the story of the Freedom Fighter.
