Have you ever wondered who built the impressive Casa Grondona? Here on Corso Italia, number 47, stands this historic building. Casa Grondona was commissioned by a wealthy industrialist, Felice Grondona. He owned the Grondona mechanical workshops, considered the best at the time. Completed in 1876, Casa Grondona showcases a sober Neo-Renaissance style, designed by architect Enrico Terzaghi. The ground floor, constructed from rectangular blocks of stone, features protruding porticos that support three balconies above. Notice the interlaced frieze. It subtly separates the ground and first floors. While the facade is not heavily ornamented, look closely for the repeated lion face masks. These decorative details can be found within roundels and on the brackets supporting the roof. Interestingly, the building is structured around a fully open courtyard at the back, leading to a garden. This design element is a testament to Terzaghi’s architectural vision, blending grandeur with a touch of tranquility. Casa Grondona stands as a reminder of Milan’s rich industrial past and the architectural prowess of the late 19th century.
