Gazing at the weathered stones of Casa do Conde São Salvador, one can almost hear the whispers of its past. Casa do Conde São Salvador stands as a silent testament to a bygone era, a two-story building now in ruins. The story of Casa do Conde São Salvador intertwines with the life of João José dos Reis, the first Viscount and Count of São Salvador de Matosinhos. Born in Matosinhos in 1820, he embarked on a journey to Brazil at the tender age of thirteen. He began his career in commerce, demonstrating unwavering dedication and zeal. Just eight years later, he established a partnership with Major António José do Amaral. His sharp intellect and tireless work ethic propelled him from employee to employer. He founded a thriving trading house, leading it for over five decades. His influence extended far beyond his own business. He served as President of the Brazilian Steam Navigation Company and the Commercial Bank of Rio de Janeiro. He was also a key founder of the Brasilian and Portuguese Bank, later known as the English Bank of Rio de Janeiro, headquartered in London. His commitment to philanthropy was equally remarkable. He supported numerous charitable institutions, including the Professional Asylum of Portuguese Benemerence, which he founded in Rio de Janeiro. He also served as President of the Portuguese Beneficence Society in Rio de Janeiro for over 20 years, eventually becoming its Perpetual President and protector. His generosity touched countless lives. He was a benefactor to the Bom Jesus de Matosinhos Brotherhood. He established nurseries and actively participated in the improvement of churches in the region. He even collaborated with other Matosinhos residents to create the Gonçalves Zarco School. Casa do Conde São Salvador, though now in ruins, reflects the grandeur of a life dedicated to commerce and compassion. It reminds us that even in decay, the echoes of a remarkable life can still resonate.
