Picture the scene. You stand before Casa de les Punxes. Its six pointed towers pierce the Barcelona sky. This isn’t just a building. It’s a fairytale made of stone.

Casa de les Punxes or Casa Terradas is more than just architecture. It’s a testament to Catalan Modernism. Josep Puig i Cadafalch designed this masterpiece. He was commissioned in 1905 by Bartomeu Terradas Brutau. Bartomeu wanted homes for his three sisters. Angela Josefa and Rosa.

Puig i Cadafalch’s vision was bold. He created a building resembling a medieval castle. He incorporated various architectural styles and innovative techniques. The six pointed towers gave it its nickname Casa de les Punxes. Punxes means spikes in Catalan.

But there’s more to Casa de les Punxes than meets the eye. Notice the intricate details. The facade is adorned with sculptures. Enric Monserdà created many of them. Look closely. You’ll find symbolic elements. Angels. Clovers. Even a sundial and calendar. These details tell the story of the Terradas sisters. Each facade reflects the personality of a sister. Anagrams hidden in the stonework represent Angela Terradas Brutau.

Puig i Cadafalch even included himself in the design. A sculpted face near a ceramic panel of Saint George resembles him. This panel shows Sant Jordi slaying the dragon. It reads “Holy Patron of Catalonia give us back our freedom.”

Casa de les Punxes wasn’t just beautiful. It was innovative. Puig i Cadafalch used cast iron pillars and metal beams. These replaced traditional load-bearing walls. This created airy open spaces. It was groundbreaking for its time.

The building remained in the Terradas family until 1975. That year it became a national historic monument. Today Casa de les Punxes is privately owned. It’s a reminder of the past. It’s also a space for the future. A modern coworking space now occupies part of this stunning building.

So look up. Marvel at the architectural genius. Let Casa de les Punxes transport you to another time. A time of dreams. A time of beauty. A time of innovation. This is more than a building. This is Barcelona’s fairytale castle.
