Casa de la Mérica endured these upheavals. It stood as the island shifted from a society based on farming and fishing to one influenced by the Spanish. Sugarcane and wine became major exports. Then cochineal a red dye from prickly pear insects. This thrived for a while but collapsed with the invention of synthetic dyes. This led to another wave of emigration. Many Gomerans sought opportunities in Cuba and Venezuela.
