Alberto Sampaio, a name whispered with reverence in the halls of Casa de Boamense. This 17th-century manor house holds the echoes of his life’s work. Casa de Boamense isn’t just a beautiful building. It’s a time capsule. The granite walls, the simple facades, they speak of centuries past. Alberto Sampaio, the historian, lived and worked within these very walls. His presence is still palpable at Casa de Boamense. A bronze plaque near the entrance commemorates his life. “Nesta Casa Viveu E Trabalhou O Historiador Alberto Sampaio 1841 – 1908 1-12-88”, it reads. Born in 1841, he dedicated his life to the study of history, choosing Casa de Boamense as his sanctuary. The house itself is a blend of architectural styles, reflecting its long history. The older, eastern wing dates back to the 17th century. The western wing, with its neogothic touches, was added in the 19th century. Imagine Alberto Sampaio walking these halls, surrounded by his extensive library. His books, a treasure trove of knowledge, were later donated to the Museu Alberto Sampaio in Guimarães. Casa de Boamense also witnessed the rise and fall of the Sampaio family’s wine business. José Sampaio, Alberto’s brother, transformed the estate into a thriving vineyard in the late 1800s. He exported wine to Brazil and earned numerous awards for his vintages. Casa de Boamense, a silent witness to their triumphs. The house stands amidst the rural landscape of Vila Nova de Famalicão, surrounded by fields and vineyards that once belonged to the estate. A neoclassical gate, flanked by granite pillars and crowned with urns, marks the entrance to this historical gem. Casa de Boamense is more than just a house. It is a testament to a family’s legacy, a historian’s passion, and the echoes of a bygone era.
