Have you ever imagined stepping into a house with a view that could rival any postcard from Tuscany? Welcome to Casa Belvedere. This magnificent mansion perched on Grymes Hill in Staten Island offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and New York Harbor. It’s more than just a stunning building though. Casa Belvedere is a vibrant cultural center a testament to Italian heritage and a fascinating piece of Staten Island’s history.

Casa Belvedere began its life in 1908 as the country estate of Louis A and Laura Stirn. Laura’s lineage is incredibly interesting. She was the granddaughter of John Augustus Roebling the famed engineer behind the Brooklyn Bridge. Her aunt Emily Warren Roebling played a pivotal role in the bridge’s completion stepping in when her engineer husband Washington became incapacitated. Casa Belvedere’s ties to this iconic landmark are undeniable adding a layer of historical significance to its already impressive story. The Stirns themselves were active members of Staten Island society contributing to the island’s social and cultural fabric. They lived in this house with their five children Laura’s widowed sister Emily Wicchers her son and a sizable household staff. Imagine the lively sounds and laughter that once filled these rooms.

The house itself is an architectural marvel a blend of Italianate and Arts & Crafts styles. Ornate columns a Mediterranean clay roof arched window frames and decorative iron railings transport you back to a bygone era of elegance and grandeur. After the Stirns passed away the mansion passed through various hands including a period as the official residence of Wagner College’s president. Then in 2008 Gina and Luciano Rammairone purchased Casa Belvedere. They had a vision to transform it into a cultural hub a beacon for Italian arts and culture. It was renamed Casa Belvedere which fittingly means “house with a beautiful view”.

Today Casa Belvedere offers a wide array of programs. Italian language classes cooking demonstrations art exhibits musical performances all celebrating the richness of Italian culture. The foundation continues the massive task of restoring this historic landmark ensuring its preservation for generations to come. This multi-million dollar project is a testament to the commitment of preserving a piece of history and creating a vibrant community center. The ongoing restoration is not just about bricks and mortar. It’s about preserving the stories the memories and the vibrant spirit of a house that embodies so much history.

So gaze upon Casa Belvedere. Absorb its beauty and history. Let its story inspire you. It’s a stunning reminder of the past and a symbol of the enduring power of culture community and vision.
