Perhaps you’ve tasted the Carolo a local pastry? Carvin is more than just a sweet treat. It is a town with layers of history. Carvin sits in the Pas-de-Calais department of France. It’s part of the Hauts-de-France region. The town once relied heavily on coal mining. Its last mine closed in 1975. Carvin is transforming into a service and residential hub. It is close to the regional capital Lille.

Carvin’s history stretches back to ancient times. Archaeological digs found evidence of Neolithic settlements. These early people were drawn to the wet lowlands near the old Epinoy castle. In 1914 Carvin fell under German occupation. It remained so until 1918. The town became a garrison and support center for the German war effort. Over 6000 soldiers found their final resting place in Carvin’s German cemetery. Carvin was awarded the Croix de Guerre for its wartime suffering.

Carvin faced another invasion in May 1940. A fierce battle raged here. It allowed many British and French troops to escape to Dunkirk. After the Allied retreat the Wehrmacht retaliated. They arrested and killed many miners in Arras. Carvin lost a big chunk of its land in 1947. The commune of Libercourt split off.

The town is known for several cultural events. The Festival des Arts de la Rue et du Cirque Les Éclectiques is held each July. Since 1999 Carvin has hosted a regional juggling convention every July.

Carvin’s coat of arms features gold coins on a blue shield. This design links Carvin to the House of Melun. Their fief was once the Land of Épinoy. Carvin is twinned with Carvico in Italy and Kłodzko in Poland. These partnerships promote friendship. They encourage cultural exchange.

The Carvin of today is a mix of old and new. It has a population of about 17966 people. About 26% are under 20 years old. Agriculture remains important. Potatoes, beets, and cereals grow here.
