Established in 1915, Carver High School stands as a testament to resilience and community in Houston’s Acres Homes. Originally known as White Oak (colored) school, Carver High School has undergone several transformations, reflecting the changing landscape of education and social progress. The Wright Land Company donated land for the initial one-room schoolhouse, a modest beginning that blossomed into a seven-grade institution by the 1930s. Carver High School even held classes at Greater Zion Baptist Church for a period, demonstrating the community’s commitment to education. Becoming part of the Aldine School District in 1937, the school continued to expand, moving to Wheatley Road in 1941. Under Principal Archie Baldwin Anderson’s leadership from 1941 to 1957, the school adopted the name George Washington Carver School, achieved accreditation, and separated into elementary and high school levels. The current Carver High School building was constructed in 1954. This construction was spurred by a significant influx of African Americans into Acres Homes. The former campus then became Carver Elementary and later A.B. Anderson Elementary. Carver High School is a magnet school focusing on Applied Technology, Engineering, and the Arts. It offers specialized programs in areas such as architecture, robotics, visual arts, and theater. While Carver High School doesn’t have its own sports teams, students can participate in athletics at their designated home high schools. Carver High School also has a rich history of achievement. In 2007, the Texas Historical Commission placed a historical marker at the school. This marker commemorates Carver High School’s significant contributions to education and community development. Among its notable alumni is actress Loretta Devine, showcasing the school’s role in nurturing talent and fostering success. Carver High School stands as a beacon of educational opportunity and a symbol of the Acres Homes community.
