Founded in the mid-1820s Carrollton First Methodist Church initially held services in homes. Later services moved to the county courthouse. Finally in 1847 a new stone edifice was constructed at 206 Newnan Street. This marked a significant step for the growing congregation. The Carrollton First Methodist Church wasn’t just a place of worship. It became a community hub.
Over the years the church expanded. A pipe organ and a parsonage were added in 1950. A balcony new Education Building and Fellowship Hall followed in 1989. Extensive repairs and a sanctuary reconfiguration were completed in 2016. The church even purchased adjacent properties as they became available. This shows a commitment to growth and expansion.
The church’s pastoral leadership also evolved. Pastors’ tenures ranged from two to four years. However some like Charles Wilson Ferrell Drummond Jimmy Thurman and Larry Patton served longer terms. Reverend Dean Milford even received the title of Pastor Emeritus in 2008. A milestone was reached in 2001 when Reverend Martha Dye became the first female clergy appointed. Five other women followed her in the role of Associate Pastor. In 2002 Reverend Olga Rodriguez became the first pastor for the Hispanic congregation. This reflects the church’s commitment to inclusivity.
The 1990s and early 2000s were a period of growth. Sunday attendance averaged 475-500 people across three services. The introduction of a contemporary worship service in 1994 was a major factor. This service called “9:45 Alive” featured a worship band Crosswalk led by Jack Barr and Pat Reynolds. Tony and Cheryl Childers dedicated 35 years to leading music in the traditional services. Their commitment to the church is remarkable. Even during the Covid-19 pandemic services continued outdoors at Carrollton Elementary School. This perseverance highlights the congregation’s faith.
In August 2023 the church voted to disaffiliate from the United Methodist Church. This decision was ratified in November 2023. This resulted in two congregations: Carrollton First Methodist Church and Community First United Methodist Church. Both congregations continue their mission to spread the gospel. Carrollton First Methodist Church remains at its Newnan Street location. Community First United Methodist Church now meets at More’s Chapel United Methodist Church. This demonstrates the enduring spirit of the original congregation. The Carrollton First Methodist Church’s journey is one of growth adaptation and faith. Its story reflects the evolution of a community deeply rooted in its history.
