The Carrollton Avenue Baptist Church has witnessed over a century of faith and community. Standing tall on South Carrollton Avenue, this unassuming building holds a rich history. It began in 1885 as a mission of the Coliseum Baptist Church, nestled in the bustling neighborhood of Carrollton, which at the time was a separate city. The Carrollton neighborhood was eventually annexed by New Orleans, creating a unique blend of cultures and traditions. In 1901, the small congregation purchased property on the corner of St. Charles Avenue and Hillary Street, changing its name to Saint Charles Avenue Baptist Church. For a sense of place, try to picture this location in your mind’s eye – imagine the grand oaks lining St. Charles Avenue, the historic architecture, and the lively energy of the city. The church moved to its current location, 2528 South Carrollton Avenue, in 1926, acquiring a large piece of property and becoming a cornerstone of the community. The church holds the distinction of having been the first in Louisiana to ordain women as deacons in 1971, demonstrating its commitment to inclusivity and breaking down barriers in the religious world.
