A crossroads paved with legend. That’s the Carrefour de l’Arbre. This 2.1 km cobbled road lies in Northern France. It stretches through Camphin-en-Pévèle Baisieux-Sin and Gruson.

The Carrefour de l’Arbre is more than just a road. It’s a place of history. It was the setting for the Battle of Bouvines. This battle ended the Anglo-French War in 1214.

But today the Carrefour de l’Arbre is best known for something else. It’s famous for the Paris-Roubaix cycling classic. This is where legends are made or broken. Its proximity to Roubaix makes it decisive. The cumulative difficulty adds to the challenge.

Since 1980 this cobbled sector has been an integral part of the race. The Carrefour de l’Arbre is a five-star sector. This means it is among the hardest. It shares this distinction with Mons-en-Pévèle and the Trouée d’Arenberg.

Cyclists face irregular pavé stones. They contend with a false flat that seems to go on forever. This is especially true in the first half. Fatigue is a constant companion this close to the finish. All these factors combine to make it incredibly difficult.

Many believe the Carrefour de l’Arbre determines the race’s outcome. Pascal Sergent put it best. He said the winner is often the one who leads through here. It is a strategic point known to all racers.

The Carrefour de l’Arbre divides into two distinct parts. The first half is a series of corners. The pavé here is highly irregular. This section runs from Camphin-en-Pévèle along the Rue de Cysoing towards Camphin de l’Arbre. It passes near the Domaine de Luchin. The second half begins after an asphalt road crossing. It ends at the Café de l’Arbre restaurant. Here the cobblestones are more uniform.

Spectators gather at the Café de l’Arbre. They watch cyclists battle across the stones. The café itself became a Michelin-starred gastronomic destination. It held this honor from 2012 to 2017.

The Carrefour de l’Arbre has witnessed dramatic moments. In 2023 John Degenkolb crashed. Wout Van Aert suffered a puncture. Mathieu van der Poel seized the opportunity to win.

The road is officially named Pavé de Luchin. This acknowledges its location. But the name Carrefour de l’Arbre is more widely known. It translates to Crossroads of the Tree. This name evokes images of ancient gatherings. It hints at the area’s rich past. The Carrefour de l’Arbre remains a pivotal location. It continues to challenge cyclists. It inspires awe in spectators. It embodies the spirit of Paris-Roubaix. It’s a place where history and sport collide.
