Isn’t it strange how a place can hold centuries of stories? Right here in Cárquere, time seems to have woven a rich tapestry. Cárquere is a small village but don’t let its size fool you. It cradles the magnificent Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Cárquere. Legend has it that the monastery’s roots intertwine with the very birth of Portugal. It’s said that Egas Moniz, tutor to the first king of Portugal, vowed to build a monastery if the king was cured of a debilitating illness. When the king made a miraculous recovery, the Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Cárquere was born. While the monastery you see today is a blend of architectural styles from different periods, look closely. You’ll find remnants of its Romanesque beginnings. Notice the tower standing tall, a silent sentinel from that era. Step inside the church, and you’ll be greeted by a fascinating fusion of Gothic and Manueline styles. The ribbed vault and the chancel window whisper tales of the Gothic era. Meanwhile, the main and north-side portals showcase the intricate artistry of the Manueline period. Look for the captivating mural paintings that adorn the nave – another treasure from the Manueline period. They depict Saint Anthony and Saint Lucia surrounded by a chorus of angels. Cárquere isn’t just a village with a monastery. It’s a living testament to the enduring power of faith, legend, and architectural grandeur.
