Gazing across Carpenterstown, can you sense the echoes of its past? Carpenterstown, known in Irish as Baile an Chairpintéaraigh, is more than just a townland. It’s a tapestry woven with threads of history, stretching back to a time when landowners like Hugh O’Neill and James Ledwich shaped its landscape. Carpenterstown in the civil parish of Castleknock is a place of intriguing contrasts. Grand houses once lined the Carpenterstown Road, marking the southern boundary of this 166-acre expanse. These residences, including Cottonwood and Fottrell Hall, have largely vanished. In their place stand clusters of newer homes. The Fottrell family, once prominent landowners here, left their mark. Their former property, “Gragarnagh,” is now the site of the modern developments “Fottrell Hall” and “Woodberry.” Gwennie Fottrell, a known figure in the dog show world, even ran the Tailtan kennels at “Garryknock.” Carpenterstown is bordered by the Royal Canal to the north, flowing peacefully between the 13th and 12th locks. The railway line cuts across at Coolmine station, where the Kirkpatrick Bridge spans the canal. Though the M50 motorway is a near neighbor, it doesn’t intrude on Carpenterstown’s tranquility. The spirit of community thrives here, under the watchful eye of St. Thomas, the Apostle Parish. Although the church building itself lies just beyond Carpenterstown’s border, in Blanchardstown. Carpenterstown retains its distinct identity, a blend of old and new. A place where the ghosts of grand houses mingle with the vibrant life of a modern community.
