Carolibron was originally built in 1934. At that time, it was perfectly suited for the traffic. The bridge spans 45 meters.
Time took its toll on Carolibron. In 1990, Carolibron was repaired. It received new insulation and surfacing at that time. But the underlying issues persisted.
In October of the previous year to its renewal, Carolibron was dismantled. The bridge’s beams had suffered significant damage. Modern vehicles and loads proved too much for the old structure.
The beams of the old bridge could not handle today’s traffic. Heavier vehicles put a strain on the aging infrastructure. A decision was made to replace Carolibron.
The reconstruction project took a year. But it was worth it. The new Carolibron is better equipped to handle modern traffic.
To celebrate the completion of Carolibron, a special event was held. On October 23, coffee and pastries were offered to passers-by. Bridge engineers and representatives from Peab were on hand. They answered questions about the project.
The revamped Carolibron also benefits boat traffic. If you have taken a boat tour on the channel Rundan you may have had to duck. The old Carolibron had a clearance of only 1.7 meters. Now the clearance has been increased to 2.25 meters. This makes it easier for boats to pass under Carolibron.
The Carolibron project cost 16 million kronor. It was an investment in Malmö’s infrastructure. Carolibron is a vital link in the city’s transportation network.
Other bridges in Malmö are also slated for repairs. Amiralsbron, Schougens bro and Davidhallsbron are next. These projects will ensure the safety and reliability of Malmö’s bridges.
