His son Walter continued the pursuit after his father’s death in 1885. Their efforts led them to Andrew Carnegie who ultimately funded the project. His contribution reached a staggering $2 million.

The building’s architect William Tuthill along with Richard Morris Hunt and Adler & Sullivan created a masterpiece. It was designed in a modified Italian Renaissance style. The smaller Zankel Hall and Weill Recital Hall offer more intimate settings. They add to the hall’s versatility.

But Carnegie Hall’s history isn’t without drama. In the 1950s it faced demolition. The New York Philharmonic its longtime resident orchestra was moving to Lincoln Center. The hall’s future seemed bleak. However Isaac Stern and others led a successful campaign to save it. Carnegie Hall was designated a National Historic Landmark and its legacy was secured. The building was renovated multiple times. Its acoustics were a topic of much debate and refinement.

Leonard Bernstein and Martha Graham among them. These studios were ultimately converted to offices and educational spaces. The last resident poet Elizabeth Sargent left in 2010.
