Did you ever hear of a spiritual desert blooming with prayer? Right here in Holladay, Utah, stands the Carmel of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, a quiet oasis of faith amidst a predominantly Mormon landscape. The Carmel of the Immaculate Heart isn’t just a building; it’s a living testament to a unique vocation. Founded in 1952 by five Carmelite nuns from California, only two of the original founders, Mother Maureen Goodwin and Sister Margaret Mary, remain. Their presence here speaks volumes about the power of dedication. Imagine a life devoted to prayer, a life lived behind a screen, unseen yet deeply felt. The Carmelites at the Carmel of the Immaculate Heart live this hidden life, their voices rising in song from behind the chapel screen, a constant prayer for the world, especially for Utah. They create altar breads and candy to support themselves. But their primary work is prayer, a spiritual labor of love that sustains the Catholic community here in this “spiritual desert.” They pray for the whole mystical body, a concept that resonated with Mother Margaret Marie Miller, the current Mother Superior. Elected in October 2014, she is one of the original founders. She shared that her vocation was inspired by St. Therese of Lisieux, the “Little Flower.” The idea of reaching everyone through prayer captivated her, leading her to this cloistered life. If you attend Mass here, you can hear the nuns singing. You’ll see the beautiful stained-glass panels flanking the wooden doors. Inside, statues of St. Joseph and St. Thérèse greet you. Stations of the Cross line the walls, leading towards the altar. The tabernacle, draped in purple, holds the Blessed Sacrament. Before Mass, a white linen is draped over one of the windows separating the nuns from the community. It’s through this window they receive Holy Eucharist. The Carmel of the Immaculate Heart is a place of quiet power. It’s a reminder that even in the most unexpected places, faith can flourish, nurtured by the constant prayers of those who have dedicated their lives to God. The Carmel of the Immaculate Heart reminds us that sometimes, the greatest impact comes from the quietest corners.
