Then, in 1842, Juan María Marrón receives Rancho Agua Hedionda. This land grant encompasses the southern part of present-day Carlsbad.
Now, picture Captain John Frazier in 1882. He digs a well near the coast. He offers the water to passengers at the train station. Soon, the area becomes known as Frazier’s Station.
But Carlsbad’s destiny takes a surprising turn. A second freshwater well reveals something remarkable. The water’s chemical composition is similar. It mirrors that of the famous spas in Karlsbad. This Bohemian town is now known as Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic.
Inspired, Gerhard Schutte and his associates form the Carlsbad Land and Mineral Water Company. The town is named Carlsbad. A major marketing campaign begins. It aims to draw visitors seeking the water’s supposed health benefits. There was even a sign at the railroad station reading “Right, drink and be happy”.
The community experiences rapid growth. Homes and businesses appear in the 1880s. Agriculture transforms the landscape. Citrus fruits, avocados, and olives flourish.
The site of John Frazier’s original well is still here. It is at Alt Karlsbad. This is a replica of a German Hanseatic house. It is on Carlsbad Boulevard.
Carlsbad faced annexation by its neighbor Oceanside in 1952. To avoid this, it incorporated as a city.
Today, Carlsbad boasts a semi-arid Mediterranean climate. It enjoys an average of 263 sunny days each year. Carlsbad is also known as “The Village by the Sea”. It is a popular tourist destination.
