“Ever wondered what secrets lie within these walls?” The Carl-Schurz-Haus stands before you a testament to transatlantic relations. Founded in 1952 as the Amerika-Haus this building initially served as a USIA information center. It was also a branch of the US Consulate General in Stuttgart.

The Carl-Schurz-Haus quickly evolved. It became a vibrant hub for cultural exchange. It moved several times due to circumstances beyond its control. The final location at Eisenbahnstraße 58-62 cemented its place in Freiburg’s history.

In 1962 budget cuts threatened the Amerika-Haus. A clever solution emerged. The institute transformed into a binational entity. This ensured its financial stability. The US Information Agency the Federal German Government Baden-Württemberg and Freiburg itself invested in this new model. The Freiburger Amerika-Haus e V. foundation was established.

A significant name change occurred in 1969. It became the Carl-Schurz-Haus. This honored the 140th birthday of Carl Schurz the German revolutionary emigrant and 13th US Secretary of the Interior. A celebratory lecture and an exhibition marked the occasion.

The Carl-Schurz-Haus continued its journey. It faced further financial challenges in 1985. German support groups stepped in saving the institute. German control became fully established. Since Freiburg and Madison Wisconsin became sister cities in 1988 the institute has served as the seat of the Freiburg-Madison-Gesellschaft.

More than just a building the Carl-Schurz-Haus is a living entity. It houses a remarkable American library. It boasts over 20000 titles. It offers English courses. It provides student advising services for those seeking US experiences. The Carl-Schurz-Haus remains a vital center for community events. It hosts about 250 events annually. These include lectures exhibitions workshops and readings. They feature German and American experts and artists. The US Presidential Election Night Party is a signature event. The Independence Day Party in the Ganter Brewery beer garden is also quite popular.

This isn’t just a building. It is a bridge connecting two cultures. It is a legacy of cooperation and understanding. The Carl-Schurz-Haus stands as a symbol of the enduring friendship between Germany and the United States. It invites you to step inside and experience its rich history.
