Before sprawling suburbs and bustling shopping centres, what did this part of Brisbane look like? Carindale, my friends, was once a much quieter place. Imagine tracts of land dominated by timber and agriculture. That’s the scene that greeted the first European settlers in the 1850s. Carindale, however, wasn’t always known by that name. It started as a housing estate back in 1976. The name, a blend of “Carin” from nearby Carina and “Dale” meaning valley, stuck and became official in 1980. Before Carindale became synonymous with modern living, it was part of Belmont. Traces of this past life remain. Consider Belmont State School, established in 1876. Today it sits within Carindale’s boundaries, a testament to the area’s evolving identity. Carindale’s growth reflects Brisbane’s expansion. Today, it boasts modern amenities like Westfield Carindale, one of the largest shopping centres in Australia. It’s hard to imagine that this land, now home to over 400 stores, once hosted a wool scour owned by the Baynes Brothers in the early 1900s. From timber to agriculture, housing estates to mega-malls, Carindale’s story is one of transformation. It reminds us that even amidst bustling urban landscapes, echoes of a quieter past can still be found.
