Carina Heights, an area that grew up within the boundaries of Brisbane, is a residential suburb with a rich history. As you stand here, looking out across the landscape, imagine a time, not so long ago, when the land was mostly bush, dotted with the occasional homestead.

Carina Heights was born from the separation of its neighbour, Carina, in 1975. The name, ‘Carina’, originates from a charming estate established in the 1850s. The estate was built by Ebenezer Thorne, who named it after his daughter, Kate Carina Thorne. This unique name was then passed on to the surrounding suburbs, including Carina Heights.

In the 1960s, the first signs of the transformation of the suburb emerged. Subdivisions sprang up around the area, and soon, signs of civilisation started to appear. A Methodist church found its home on Anzac Road, a Catholic church and school were built at the Corner of Winstanley Street and Creek Road, and a post office and shops started catering to the needs of the growing community.

Carina Heights, however, is more than just a modern residential area. It is a place with a spirit of community, rooted in its past. The area boasts the Belmont Private psychiatric hospital, a testament to the area’s transformation from a serene bush setting to one requiring healthcare.

The name Carina Heights is derived from the rise known as Carina Heights, which now houses the hospital. Today, Carina Heights continues to evolve, offering a peaceful escape from the urban bustle of the city. While its history is steeped in the land’s natural beauty and the community’s development, its future promises even brighter prospects.
