Seven kilometres east of Brisbane’s bustling CBD lies Carina. A quiet haven named for Ebenezer Thorne’s daughter Kate Carina. This unassuming suburb holds a rich history stretching back to the 1850s. Imagine European settlers arriving on land already inhabited by the Murris people most likely the Jagera. They began farming and logging. Carina wasn’t always the residential area it is today. It was once the heart of the Belmont Shire a significant settlement in its time.

Growth exploded after World War II. Prefabricated houses arrived from Italy a fascinating detail often overlooked. Unfortunately these Italian houses had an unwelcome stowaway. A timber pest infestation. Every piece of imported timber had to be fumigated before construction could begin. This unexpected delay highlights the challenges faced in post-war reconstruction.

The suburb’s development wasn’t only about homes. Carina saw the expansion of the Brisbane tram network. In 1948 trams reached Mayfield Road just short of Carina village. The trolleybus system also played a part. It served Stanley Road until 1969. These transport systems were pivotal in shaping Carina’s growth and connectivity.

Public housing projects were key to Carina’s rapid population expansion in the 1950s and 60s. The creation of several estates dramatically altered the suburb’s demographic landscape. Educational institutions also sprang up. Mayfield State School opened in 1956. St Martin’s Catholic Primary School followed in 1954. San Sisto College a Catholic girls’ school began in 1961. These schools have played an integral role in shaping the community.

The Carina Library opened in 1966. A testament to the community’s growth and the importance of knowledge and cultural access. Its recent refurbishment in 2016 reflects the ongoing investment in the area. Even a police station a symbol of community safety and order arrived relatively recently in 2011.

Carina’s story is a blend of historical significance modern amenities and community spirit. It’s a testament to the evolution of a suburb from rural beginnings to a thriving residential community within easy reach of Brisbane’s heart. From humble beginnings in the shadow of a remarkable family’s story to its present-day vibrancy Carina remains a unique and captivating place in Brisbane’s rich tapestry.
