Imagine a hidden gem in Jamaica Hills. That’s Captain Tilly Park. This 9.16-acre park offers a serene escape north of downtown Jamaica.

Captain Tilly Park is bordered by 165th Street to the west. 85th Avenue is to the north. Chapin Parkway and Gothic Drive define its northeast edge. Highland Avenue marks the southern boundary.

The park’s story began long ago. The Tilly family owned this land. In 1908, they gifted it to New York City. There was one condition. It had to remain a park forever. For just one dollar.

Initially, it was named Highland Park. Confusion arose with Brooklyn’s larger Highland Park. In 1912, its name changed to Upland Park.

The park received its current name in 1935. It honors Captain George H. Tilly. He was a Jamaica resident. He died in the Spanish–American War.

Captain Tilly Park includes Goose Pond. It is Jamaica Hills’ only remaining kettle pond. Kettle ponds formed from receding glaciers. Goose Pond sits on the Harbor Hill Moraine’s north edge. This moraine stretches across Long Island.

Goose Pond features a bird sanctuary. It’s known as the smallest island in the smallest natural body of water in New York City. Early in the 20th century, Goose Pond was a popular ice-skating spot in winter.

But Goose Pond faced challenges. In 1926, it was drained during Jamaica High School’s construction.

Later, Goose Pond suffered from algae blooms. Stagnant water caused this. It killed many fish. The city allocated funds for a cleanup. In 1995, restoration began. Seven underwater air pumps were added. The pond became an aerated lagoon.

NYC Parks introduced thousands of fish. But soon after, many fish died. Residents blamed the warm weather and demanded an investigation.

Captain Tilly Park has undergone many changes. In 1941, a Spanish-American War heroes’ monument was erected. In the late 20th century, many trees died. The park fell into disrepair.

The park has been renovated several times. A renovation started in 2014. It cost 2.4 million dollars. Paths and equipment were restored. Invasive species were removed from Goose Pond.

Captain Tilly Park continues to evolve. It offers a playground. It offers restrooms. It offers a connection to nature and history.

So, remember Captain Tilly Park. It is a testament to community. It is a place of remembrance. It is a green oasis in Queens.
