The Captain Nathen Brookshire Plaque tells us that he served bravely in the U.S. Army during the War of 1812. He then became a member of Stephen F. Austin’s Fifth Colony. Along with his wife, Mary Ann Hooks Brookshire, they left Tennessee and settled in what is now Brookshire, Texas. Captain Nathen Brookshire’s bravery was recognized when he participated in the storming and capture of Bexar from December 5th to 10th, 1835. This event was a decisive victory for the Texan forces during the Texas Revolution. In 1836, he was granted 640 acres of land for his military service. And in 1839, during the “Captain Bird/Creek Indian Fight,” he assumed command after Captain Bird’s death, showcasing his leadership skills yet again.
