Do you see that majestic eagle perched atop the granite pillar? That’s the centerpiece of the Captain Clinton E. Fisk Memorial Park Statue. This isn’t just any statue. It stands as a powerful tribute to a brave soldier and a symbol of Jersey City’s profound gratitude.

The park itself was originally named Riverview Park. It was dedicated on Memorial Day in 1922. A Soldier’s and Sailor’s Monument was installed to honor those from Hudson City who fought in World War I. This monument featured an eagle on a ball. This was atop a tall rough granite pillar. The eagle and ball were painted gold.

The story of Captain Clinton E. Fisk is woven into this very spot. He was born April 13 1882 in Jersey City. Captain Fisk served with distinction in the 107th Infantry Regiment of the 27th Division during World War I. He was tragically killed in action on October 18 1918. His valiant actions near the Arbre Guemon-Le Cateau Road in France earned him a Silver Star.

Then in 1947 the park was renamed in his honor. The top dedication plaque was added on October 19 1947. This was a gesture of remembrance by Captain Clinton E. Fisk Post No. 132. This post and its auxiliary were part of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. The inscription pays tribute to Captain Fisk calling him a fine gentleman and soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice for Americanism. Another plaque remembers all those from the Hudson City section who served in World War I.

Look closely at the base of the monument. The granite is weathered. It’s a testament to the passage of time and the enduring respect for Captain Fisk’s legacy. His story is one of bravery service and sacrifice. It’s a story etched not only in bronze but in the very heart of this park. The Captain Clinton E. Fisk Memorial Park Statue is more than just a monument. It’s a living memorial a place of reflection and a constant reminder of the ultimate price of freedom.
