Determined to improve the quality of San Diego’s sportfishing fleet. That’s what drove Captain Bill Poole. This plaque honors him and other devoted captains. It recognizes those who made San Diego the world’s finest sportfishing home port.

Captain Bill Poole et al Plaque is a tribute to a legend. Bill Poole wasn’t just a pioneer. He redefined long-range sportfishing. His adventurous spirit and relentless attitude pushed the industry forward.

Born in 1922, Bill Poole’s love for the sea began early. After serving in the Navy, he started his remarkable career in 1947. He became the youngest owner-skipper in San Diego. For over six decades, he shaped sportfishing, marina, and boat building.

Poole questioned conventional wisdom. He used his deep knowledge of the sea. He built boats that took sportfishing to the extreme. Many followed but none matched his pace. He progressed into marina construction. He also owned them as his fleet expanded.

When existing boats didn’t meet his needs, he built his own. His company produced sixty to one hundred twenty-foot sport fishers. They also built superior quality luxury yachts.

Bill Poole’s impact extends beyond fishing. He improved San Diego and Mission Bays’ waterfronts. With his wife Ingrid, he developed sportfishing landings and marinas. They also created marine fuel docks.

Ingrid was integral to Bill’s success. She managed supplies and business promotions. She decorated boat interiors. She even offered advice at the boat yard.

Poole’s legacy includes numerous vessels. The EXCEL was the final chapter in his career. He owned and operated ten sportfishing vessels from 1947 to 2009. These included the original Polaris, Polaris II, and Royal Polaris.

He obtained permits to explore remote destinations. He built boats suited for long-distance travel. These boats complied with Coast Guard requirements.

The Poole Boat Company became a leader in aluminum boat construction. They attracted orders for luxury yachts. Bill hired Todd Chaffee, a brilliant boat designer. Together, they improved functionality and comfort. They advanced the sportfishing boat industry.

Bill Poole’s vision led to world-record catches. He mentored young captains. He expanded the horizons of San Diego’s fleet.

The Sportfishing Legacy monument ensures his memory lives on. The bronze bust of Poole sits atop a rocky seamount. Metal silhouettes of tuna and yellowtail surround it. The names of sportfishing vessels and fishing grounds are also included.

Bill Watts and Craig Hill created the artwork. Hankins Corp., Windward Design, and Craig Hill Studios collaborated on construction. The project was funded by H&M Landing, Point Loma Sportfishing, and Fisherman’s Landing.

Poole was inducted into the International Game Fish Association Hall of Fame. He joined legends like Zane Grey and Ernest Hemingway.

This plaque stands as a reminder of Bill Poole’s contributions. He was a pioneer, visionary, and a true legend. His legacy continues to inspire anglers and boat builders worldwide.
