Did you know that bones could be beautiful? Here at the Cappella di San Bernardino alle Ossa in Milan, they are. The Cappella di San Bernardino isn’t just a chapel. It’s a testament to life, death, and the strange beauty of the in-between. The Cappella di San Bernardino began not as a chapel, but as a cemetery. In 1210, the cemetery next to the Santo Stefano Maggiore Church overflowed. A small chamber was built to house the bones. Later, in 1269, a church was built alongside it, the precursor to the Cappella di San Bernardino we see today. This wasn’t the end of the story for the Cappella di San Bernardino. Fire ravaged the structure in 1712. It was rebuilt and dedicated to Saint Bernardino of Siena. The ossuary, accessible through a narrow corridor to the right of the entrance, is the heart of the Cappella di San Bernardino. The walls are adorned with skulls and bones, arranged in intricate patterns. These are the remains of patients from the nearby Brolo Hospital, monks who served there, and those who died in prison. Above the altar, a statue of Our Lady of Sorrows keeps watch. The ceiling of the Cappella di San Bernardino’s ossuary tells its own story. Sebastiano Ricci’s 1695 fresco, “Triumph of Souls in a Flight of Angels,” depicts a vibrant scene of angels and the four patron saints: the Virgin Mary, Saint Ambrose, Saint Sebastian, and Saint Bernardino of Siena. This artwork isn’t simply decoration. It’s a reflection of the beliefs of the time, a reminder of the soul’s triumph over death. The Cappella di San Bernardino alle Ossa is more than just a macabre spectacle. It’s a place for contemplation, a reminder of our own mortality, and a unique blend of art, history, and spirituality. This place inspired King John V of Portugal to create a similar chapel in Évora, near Lisbon. It’s a testament to the lasting impact of this unique space.
