Within the hallowed halls of Santa Maria delle Grazie lies the Cappella della Vergine Maria. Its story begins long before the imposing church was built. A modest chapel stood on this very spot. It held a fresco of Our Lady of Graces. This simple image sparked a devotion that would reshape the landscape.

The priests envisioned a grander space to honour the Virgin Mary. They planned a church and convent. In 1463 construction began under the skillful hand of Guiniforte Solari. The main convent structures rose by 1469. The church itself however took longer to complete finally finished in 1482.

Seven chapels lined each aisle within the finished church. Wealthy Milanese families claimed these as their burial places and private oratories. Master artists adorned these chapels with breathtaking frescoes. Gaudenzio Ferrari’s work is especially noteworthy in the Chapels of the Adoring Virgin and the Holy Crown.

Originally the Chapel of the Holy Crown housed Titian’s stunning altarpiece. It depicted Christ crowned with thorns. Sadly this masterpiece was lost during the Napoleonic era. It is now a prized possession of the Louvre Museum.

The convent itself boasted three cloisters. The first was tragically demolished in 1897. It originally housed Count Vimercati’s troops and served as an infirmary. The Great Cloister remained. The monks’ cells overlooked its peaceful expanse. The Chapter House and Locutory faced the east. Solari masterfully crafted the library. He modeled it on the Dominican Convent of San Marco in Florence a testament to his architectural skill.

War tragically struck Santa Maria delle Grazie during World War II. Allied bombing in 1943 devastated parts of the convent. The refectory collapsed. Amazingly the wall holding Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper survived. It had been protected by sandbags. This iconic painting survived thanks to careful preservation. Its restoration continued for decades. It finally emerged from centuries of deterioration a testament to human resilience.

Today the Old Sacristy designed by Donato Bramante is a Dominican Cultural Centre. It hosts conferences exhibitions and musical events. The Cappella della Vergine Maria itself though small remains a poignant reminder of faith perseverance and the enduring power of art. It stands within a greater whole a symbol of the layered history of Milan itself.
