Capitol View United Methodist Church is in a historically rich area. This area was once farmland and pasture. Around 1910, things changed. Andrew P Stewart, John Shannon, and the Deckner family owned much of this land.

William D Beatie, a realtor, saw potential. He subdivided the land. Modest homes were built and sold. Utilities were installed making the area more attractive. In 1913, Capitol View officially became part of Atlanta. It was annexed to the Tenth Ward.

The name Capitol View came from the clear view of the State Capitol dome. Early residents enjoyed this unique vista. The Capitol View Baptist Church formed in 1908. Twelve charter members met in a small frame building. They used lanterns to light their way.

The community grew quickly. By the early 1920s, Capitol View expanded. It spread east of Stewart Avenue. Annexations in 1916, 1925, and 1926 added more territory to the city.

In 1914, the Capitol View Masonic Lodge was established. By 1921, they built a three-story brick building. It sat on the corner of Stewart and Dill Avenues. This location became a hub for local shopping.

Capitol View Baptist Church also flourished. In 1927, they built a substantial church building. It faced the Masonic Building across Stewart Avenue. The church grew to over 2000 members.

Today, Capitol View is a thriving neighborhood. It is about four miles from downtown Atlanta. It is seven miles from Midtown. The area is nine miles from Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta Airport.

The closest MARTA train station is Oakland City. From there, it is a short walk into the neighborhood. Capitol View borders several historic areas. Adair Park is to the north. Capitol View Manor is to the east. Sylvan Hills lies to the south. Historic Oakland City is to the west.
