“A fortress of faith,” whispered a woman to her child, clutching the small hand tighter as they approached the Capilla Nuestra Señora de la Fortaleza. The weathered stones of the Capilla Nuestra Señora de la Fortaleza seemed to hum with a quiet strength. The air around the chapel crackled with unseen energy. This wasn’t just a building. It was a sanctuary, a testament to unwavering belief spanning over a century. The Capilla Nuestra Señora de la Fortaleza, originally built by the Carmelite Order in 1917, stands as a symbol of resilience and devotion. Funds for its construction came from the community. Donations, raffles, and even ‘mingas,’ collaborative work efforts, contributed to its completion in 1923. But the story of Capilla Nuestra Señora de la Fortaleza doesn’t end with the Carmelites. Around 1966, the chapel and the adjacent convent were passed to the Dominican Order, the Provincia Dominicana de San Luis Beltrán. This marked a new chapter in the chapel’s life, a continuation of its sacred purpose under new guardianship. The Capilla Nuestra Señora de la Fortaleza was not always known by this name. It carried the monikers “Capilla del Carmen” and “Capilla San Martín de Porres,” echoes of its past and the communities it served. Fast forward to more recent times, and the Capilla Nuestra Señora de la Fortaleza faced a new challenge. After being closed for over two decades, the chapel was in dire need of restoration. In a collaborative effort, Comfenalco Valle Delagente and the Dominican Order undertook a nine-month project to revitalize this historic gem. The restoration breathed new life into the Capilla Nuestra Señora de la Fortaleza. It preserved its original architectural features while also incorporating modern elements. The project also provided over 150 jobs, contributing to the local community. Today, the Capilla Nuestra Señora de la Fortaleza stands as a beacon of hope and faith in the heart of Cali’s historic center. It welcomes visitors and locals alike, its doors open for Sunday Mass and other religious celebrations. The echoes of prayers, whispered over a century, continue to resonate within its walls. The Capilla Nuestra Señora de la Fortaleza, a place where history, faith, and community converge.
