Can you imagine a city of less than 5,000 people? That’s what Santiago de Cali was like in the 18th century. The houses were spread out, reaching up to the Hill of San Antonio. Here, nestled among the slopes, lies the Capilla de San Antonio. This Baroque gem is a testament to faith, resilience, and the beauty that can blossom even in the most humble beginnings. The story of this chapel began in 1742 when the priest, José de Alegría, saw the need for a viceparroquia on the hill. He recognized the difficulty for the faithful to attend Mass at the main church, San Pedro. The construction of the Capilla de San Antonio was made possible by a generous donation of 1,000 patacones from Juan de Orejuela. Afterward, a plot of land was donated by Juan Francisco Garcés de Aguilar in 1746. The chapel was built in record time and was consecrated in 1747. This chapel was more than just a place of worship; it was a meeting point for the people of Cali. The faithful flocked here on Sundays and holidays to celebrate their faith, and the church evolved over the years, undergoing renovations in 1786 and 1803. In 1944, to commemorate its 200th anniversary, the chapel underwent a major restoration. This work preserved the Capilla de San Antonio’s unique Baroque style, with its curved presbytery steps and balustrade. It features an intriguing brick facade, with an arched entrance flanked by pilasters. The bell tower is a remarkable feature with its three levels, constructed entirely in brick. The bells reside in two half-point openings, showcasing the distinctive Almohad style. The chapel’s story shows how a simple building can become a symbol of a community’s faith and cultural heritage. The Capilla de San Antonio whispers stories of devotion, philanthropy, and the enduring spirit of a city as it has for centuries.
