Whispers of remembrance linger in the air around the Capilla de Ánimas. This chapel resides within Granada’s cemetery between Las Camelias street and the road to Nandaime.

Let me tell you about this chapel. It is a serene neoclassical structure with a story etched in stone.

In 1878, a North American named Teodoro E Hooke initiated a campaign. His goal was to provide Granada’s cemetery with its own chapel. The walls of the Capilla de Ánimas rose in 1885. Only the roof was missing at that time. Carlos Ferrey was the master builder who directed the construction. The Local Board of Charity took charge later. They finalized the works in 1922.

Look closely at the Capilla de Ánimas main facade. Four fluted columns of the Ionic order frame it. These columns rest on a raised atrium. A wide pediment crowns the structure with moldings and decorations.

Notice the walls. They are constructed of carved quarry stone. Fine chisel carvings embellish them. The roof is defined by a vault. A taquezal dome finishes the altar.

The Capilla de Ánimas stands as a testament to faith. It is a tribute to those who rest in Granada’s cemetery. Take a moment to appreciate its neoclassical beauty. Remember the souls for whom it was built.
