Tucked away on Union Street, the Capen House whispers tales of Boston’s vibrant past. The Capen House isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to centuries of history, a place where the echoes of oystermen, printers, and revolutionaries mingle with the aromas of fresh seafood. Built in the early 1700s, the Capen House stands as one of the oldest structures in its neighborhood. Its solid, belted front wall and aged roof have witnessed the transformation of Boston from a colonial outpost to a bustling metropolis. For years, the aroma of commerce filled the air as Hopestill Capen, shopkeeper, town official, and sergeant for the Ancient & Honorable Company, ran his business within these very walls. A young Benjamin Thompson, later known as the distinguished scientist Count Rumford, apprenticed under Capen in 1763, learning skills that would shape his future. After Hopestill’s passing in 1807, his son, Thomas, took over the family business, continuing the Capen legacy until 1819. Remarkably, the Capen family retained ownership well into the 20th century. But the Capen House’s story doesn’t end there. In 1826, the ground floor was transformed into the Union Oyster House. This legendary establishment holds the title of the longest continuously operating restaurant in the United States, serving up delectable seafood to generations of Bostonians and visitors alike. Imagine the clatter of plates and the lively chatter of patrons enjoying fresh oysters within the same walls that once housed a colonial shop. But the Capen House’s history takes another intriguing turn. Before the scent of seafood permeated the air, the clatter of a printing press echoed within its walls. Isaiah Thomas, a prominent figure in early American journalism, published the Massachusetts Spy here from 1771 until the outbreak of the Revolution. This fiery publication helped fuel the flames of independence, making the Capen House a silent witness to the birth of a nation. Today, the Capen House stands proudly on Boston’s Freedom Trail. It’s surrounded by other historical landmarks. The Boston Stone, the Ebenezer Hancock House, the Holocaust Memorial, Curley Park, and Faneuil Hall are all within a short stroll. So, as you stand before the Capen House, take a moment to absorb its rich history. Imagine the figures who walked these halls, the stories these walls could tell, and the events they silently witnessed. The Capen House isn’t just a stop on the Freedom Trail. It’s a portal to Boston’s vibrant past, a place where the echoes of history resonate with every step.
