Gazing upon the Capela Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos, one can almost hear the echoes of its past. The Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto, a charitable institution, has a long history with this site. They once accompanied those condemned to death at the gallows. They then provided burial in the Adro dos Enforcados, a cemetery near the old Porta do Olival. This very ground would later house the Clérigos Church and Tower. Capela Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos wasn’t always here. In 1769, the cemetery, a chapel, and a stone cross depicting Senhor dos Aflitos were moved. They found a new home at the edge of the land designated for the Hospital de Santo António. The cemetery eventually closed. In 1836, the Santa Casa da Misericórdia relocated the revered chapel and cross to the hospital grounds. The objects of devotion found a place within the chapel itself. Capela Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos underwent significant renovations between 1856 and 1857. Following its reopening on June 13, 1857, it hosted Sunday masses and annual festivities dedicated to Senhor dos Aflitos on June 14th. A new chapter unfolded in 1993 with the hospital’s expansion. The chapel was dismantled. Its granite blocks were carefully numbered and stored, awaiting their resurrection. In 2008, the Capela Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos was meticulously reconstructed within the renewed hospital grounds, a testament to its enduring significance.
