Was this chapel always dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição? We are standing before the Capela Nossa Senhora da Conceição. It might surprise you to know that this chapel wasn’t always dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição. It originally honored Saint Sebastian. The exact date when it shifted its allegiance to Nossa Senhora da Conceição remains a mystery. The Capela Nossa Senhora da Conceição itself stands as a testament to the Baroque style that graced Porto. Constructed sometime in the 19th century, its design hints at the hand of Nicolau Nasoni. He was the mastermind behind Porto’s iconic Torre dos Clérigos. While it’s not confirmed if Nasoni personally designed this chapel, its style aligns with his distinctive touch. Inside, you’ll find three altars. The main altar features Nossa Senhora da Conceição,flanked by Saint Anne and Saint Sebastian. The side altars pay homage to Saint Francis of Assisi and Queen Saint Elizabeth. This charming chapel served as a place of worship for a confraternity devoted to Nossa Senhora da Conceição. Confraternities were religious brotherhoods common in Porto’s history. They played an active role in the city’s social and religious fabric. While the confraternity may be long gone, the parish of São João Baptista da Foz do Douro now ensures the annual celebrations for Nossa Senhora da Conceição continue, preserving the chapel’s legacy for generations to come.
