“Did you hear about the fire at Manleuana market?” a resident whispers to another. “Terrible business, that. But at least Capela Manleuana was spared.” The Capela Manleuana, a beacon of faith in the heart of Dili, has borne witness to such events, standing as a steadfast presence amidst the ebb and flow of life in this vibrant city. While the bustling marketplace, established in 2012, bustles nearby with the commerce of over 1,000 traders, the Capela offers a quiet respite. Within its walls, it holds not just the spirit of faith, but also whispers of resilience, echoing the story of Timor-Leste itself. After all, the Capela stands in Manleuana, a relatively young Suco, formally established only in 2017 from parts of Bairro Pite and Comoro. Just as this community came together from different parts, so too does the Capela serve as a point of unity for the faithful. The spirit of unity is essential, especially in the face of adversity, as the fire at the market sadly demonstrated. Yet, just as the Capela has endured, so too does the spirit of the Timorese people, ever-resilient, ever-strong.
