Crashing waves. That’s the constant companion of the Capela do Senhor da Pedra. This chapel clings to a rocky outcrop just off Miramar Beach in Vila Nova de Gaia. It’s a dramatic sight. The waves lash against the rocks, seemingly threatening to engulf the little chapel. Yet, it has stood firm for almost three centuries. The Capela do Senhor da Pedra was built in 1763. It replaced an ancient pagan site. You can find evidence of this history on azulejo panels flanking the chapel entrance. One inscription notes the rock’s use as an ancient place of worship, predating Christianity. Another describes the long history of Gulpilhares, going back to antiquity. The Capela do Senhor da Pedra itself is a charming hexagonal structure. It has a Baroque/Rococo interior, complete with a gilded altar and two side altarpieces. Religious statues adorn the space, most notably a crucifix. The annual romaria, or pilgrimage, to Senhor da Pedra is a significant event. It’s celebrated on Trinity Sunday, extending through the following Tuesday. Locals say the Capela do Senhor da Pedra belongs as much to the sea as to the land. It’s a place of tranquility. You can feel the sea breeze on your face as you walk around the chapel, taking in the breathtaking view. Many believe this spot was chosen due to a mysterious light that repeatedly appeared over the rocks during the planning stages of the chapel’s construction. This light was interpreted as a divine sign. Another legend says the chapel was built by a shipwrecked sailor. He had vowed to build a chapel wherever he first set foot on land if he survived.
