The imposing structure before you is the Capela do Sao Miguel Arcanjo. It stands as a silent witness to Dili’s vibrant history. Its foundation was laid in 2002. This wasn’t just the start of a chapel. It marked the beginning of a comprehensive educational complex.
Sao Miguel Arcanjo started small. A pre-school and a primary school were the first buildings. Later a vocational technical school was added. Finally in 2018 the general secondary school was completed. The chapel itself though forms a central part of this evolving educational campus.
The Sao Miguel Arcanjo complex isn’t simply bricks and mortar. It embodies a vision. This vision is to shape Timor-Leste’s citizens. The aim is to contribute to national development through education. It’s a powerful mission a beacon of hope in a country rebuilding itself.
However the school and chapel faced challenges. The expansion of a road project impacted the campus. Part of the Sao Miguel Arcanjo land was needed. Negotiations ensued. The government agreed to compensate. The school would receive 1.7 million dollars. This money was not just for relocation. It was also allocated for the construction of a new building. A new and improved Sao Miguel Arcanjo complex was planned.
Even the national television station TVE found temporary space within the Sao Miguel Arcanjo complex. Its programming moved to Timor Plaza during the road works. TVE continued to broadcast news and information to the public. It kept the nation connected.
The Sao Miguel Arcanjo chapel and school though are more than just buildings. They are a testament to resilience. They reflect the enduring spirit of the Timorese people. They continue to serve as symbols of education and faith. The complex continues its mission to shape the future of Timor-Leste. The Sao Miguel Arcanjo remains a powerful presence in Dili.
