Stepping into the Parque de São Roque, you might be forgiven for missing the Capela do Parque de São Roque altogether. Nestled subtly among the trees and pathways, it’s almost as if it’s trying to blend in. The Capela do Parque de São Roque has a history that goes back to the 18th century. Back then, it stood proudly on Rua Actor Dias but was dismantled, brick by brick, and brought to the park in 1979. Why the move? Well, the park, which originated from the division of the Quinta da Bela-Vista, had just been opened to the public. The Câmara Municipal do Porto, the city council, thought it would be a lovely addition to the green space.
A modest rectangular building, the chapel has a front that’s quite striking. It features a simple, straight archway over the entrance, framed by a triangular pediment, topped with a cross. Now, take a look to your right. At the side of the chapel, you’ll see an arched element with three rounded arches, a fascinating architectural detail that adds a dose of mystery to the facade. Imagine the stories the chapel has seen, the prayers whispered within its walls, and the people who sought solace within its modest embrace.
