The Capela do Mártir São Sebastião dates back to the 13th century. However it underwent a complete rebuild in the 1700s. Yet some original features remain. The marble altar from 1567 still stands. It proudly displays an image of St Sebastian. Beautiful 17th-century geometric polychromatic tiles cover the entire interior. They are a stunning example of Portuguese craftsmanship.
Interestingly the chapel once served as the headquarters for a brotherhood of single men. Their tombs were once inside. While the tombs are gone the chapel’s core remains untouched. Each year at the end of January a special festival takes place here. It honors St Sebastian and St Vincent. The festivities start with a Mass inside the Capela do Mártir São Sebastião. The celebration then spills out into the streets. It is a vibrant display of community spirit. Music dancing and feasting abound.
From its position on a slight rise you can see its connection to the beach below. The steps leading down from the chapel offer a breathtaking view.
