Lost in time, the Capela do Bom Sucesso stands as a testament to Porto’s rich history. This 18th-century chapel, nestled within the modern cityscape, whispers tales of a bygone era. The Capela do Bom Sucesso was once part of the Quinta do Bom Sucesso, a rural estate on the outskirts of Porto. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Porto was smaller than it is today, surrounded by such estates owned by wealthy families. These families used these “quintas” as summer homes and for leisure. António de Almeida Saraiva, a wealthy merchant, built the quinta and the adjacent Capela do Bom Sucesso in the late 1700s. He dedicated the Baroque-style chapel to Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso (Our Lady of Good Success). The Capela do Bom Sucesso quickly gained devotees. According to the “Parochial Memories of 1758”, people would travel from Porto to pray at the chapel. The estate eventually passed through marriage to António de Sá Lopes. As Porto grew, the quinta was sold and urbanized. Now, the land once cultivated lies beneath the streets and buildings of modern Porto. The Capela do Bom Sucesso and the quinta’s house remain. They have been incorporated into the glass skyscraper of the Shopping Cidade do Porto. Both structures have been restored, maintaining their original exterior. The house is now a restaurant-bar. The Capela do Bom Sucesso has been reopened for worship, under the care of the Missionaries of the Verbum Dei Missionary Fraternity.
