A whisper of history brushes against your face. Welcome to the Capela de Santa Iria in Porto. This unassuming chapel holds centuries of stories within its walls. Built in 1573 by Queen Catarina it stands near the old aqueduct. The workers building the aqueduct vowed to build a small temple. They dedicated it to Saint Iria on the day the work was completed October 20th. This small chapel was later enlarged by Philip III. Sadly the 1755 earthquake partially destroyed it.

Within the Capela de Santa Iria rests a small statue. It is a 15th-century stone sculpture of the patron saint. Imagine the countless prayers whispered before this image. Picture the villagers attending the lively fairs once held near this very spot. The fairs continue to this day a tradition linked to this chapel.

The chapel’s modest exterior belies its rich past. This little place is a testament to faith and resilience. It’s endured earthquakes and the passage of time. It continues to stand a silent witness to Porto’s history. The Capela de Santa Iria is more than just stones and mortar. It is a living link to the past. A reminder of the devotion of those who built it and those who continue to pray within its walls. Leaving this sacred space you carry with you a piece of Porto’s soul.
