Hidden in plain sight, the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Alívio whispers tales of faith and healing. This chapel, tucked away on Rua Nossa Senhora do Alívio in Paraíso, holds a special place in the hearts of locals. It became a sanctuary of hope in the late 18th century. The Capela de Nossa Senhora do Alívio owes its existence to a remarkable story of divine intervention. In 1798, Father Xavier Fràgoas, stricken by a grave illness, prayed to Nossa Senhora for healing. He vowed to build a chapel in her honor if his prayers were answered. Miraculously, he recovered. True to his word, Father Fràgoas began construction of the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Alívio. The original structure, completed in 1798, was a testament to his faith and gratitude. The Capela de Nossa Senhora do Alívio quickly became a popular pilgrimage site. The influx of devotees led to its expansion in 1872. A new building was erected to accommodate the growing number of worshippers. Today, the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Alívio continues to draw pilgrims, especially during the annual festivities held on the second and third Sundays of September. The faithful gather to honor Nossa Senhora do Alívio. They celebrate her enduring legacy of hope and healing.
