Seven streams whispered secrets. This is the Capela das Sete Bicas. Its very name sings of a place where water and faith intertwine. Built in 1514 it began as a promise. Aleixo Francisco a seafarer vowed to build this chapel if blessed with a son.

The original name was ‘Mãe d’Água’ Mother of Water. A massive underground spring gushed forth here. The water’s abundance fueled a powerful legend. People believed it held the power of fertility. For centuries couples came seeking blessings. They drank from the seven spouts hoping for children or happy marriages.

In 1620 the chapel took on its current name. Architect Gonçalo Vaz shaped the structure we see today. The seven spouts the ‘sete bicas’ became the iconic feature of the Capela das Sete Bicas. The original fountain was reconstructed in 1893. Its miraculous properties however endured.

The Capela das Sete Bicas wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a community hub. It became the parish church until 1963 when a larger church was built. Near it stood a chapel dedicated to Saint Bartholomew. That chapel was demolished in the late 19th century. The image of Saint Bartholomew however found a home inside the Capela das Sete Bicas.

The interior holds treasures. Gilded altars from the 18th and 19th centuries shimmer in the light. These are not mere decorations. They’re testaments to the unwavering devotion of generations. They stand as silent witnesses to countless prayers whispered within these walls.

The bell tower a later addition was built in 1911. It’s a powerful symbol of the chapel’s enduring presence. Its sound carries across the years echoing the faith of the people.

Even today you can almost hear the whispered prayers. Feel the hope that flowed like the water from the seven spouts. The Capela das Sete Bicas isn’t just stone and mortar. It’s a living testament to faith resilience and the enduring power of a legend. A place where the past present and future of Senhora da Hora converge in a sacred embrace.
