“A canvas of blue,” whispered a woman, her voice filled with awe as she gazed upon the Capela da Via Cova. In the heart of bustling Porto, adorned with a breathtaking tapestry of blue and white tiles, stands the Capela da Via Cova. Don’t let its initial simplicity fool you. This chapel, built in the early 18th century, holds within its walls a history as vibrant as the azulejos that adorn it. Though it may appear unassuming at first glance, the Capela da Via Cova has a captivating story to tell. The present structure, dating back to the late 18th century, replaced a humble wooden chapel dedicated to Saint Catherine. Its story intertwines with the Brotherhood of Souls and Wounds of Saint Francis, who relocated here, sparking a renewed devotion to Saint Catherine and prompting the chapel’s reconstruction. Over 15,000 meticulously crafted azulejo tiles, designed by Eduardo Leite and created in Lisbon, cloak the chapel’s exterior. These tiles narrate the lives of Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Catherine, their vibrant hues breathing life into the stories of their devotion and sacrifice. Step inside, and you’ll find yourself enveloped in the serenity of neoclassical design. The main altar commands attention with Joaquim Rafael’s masterpiece, “The Ascension of the Lord,” a testament to the chapel’s role as a place of worship and contemplation. Capela da Via Cova stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and artistry.
